Restoring Candidacy for Upper Dental Implants with a Sinus Lift

Many patients who are otherwise good candidates for dental implants often lack the jawbone tissue to support them. However, losing bone tissue does not necessarily bar patients from this treatment. For those who specifically need implants for teeth missing from their upper arch, Dr. Mark Tall can perform a sinus lift procedure to restore candidacy. During a consultation at Sandcreek Dental in Idaho Falls, ID, practice, we can evaluate your case and determine if this treatment is appropriate for your oral health needs. Our entire team at Sandcreek Dental employs precise, modern techniques to minimize discomfort during the procedure.

When is a Sinus Lift Necessary?

A sinus lift is a preparatory procedure for dental implant placement, recommended to restore lost bone mass in the upper jaw. In order to accommodate the sinus cavities, the upper jawbone is already naturally thin. As a result, it is much more likely to lack the necessary bone to support implants. Further bone recession can result from a number of health problems, including:

  • Untreated tooth loss
  • Severe gum disease
  • Jawbone injury or facial trauma
  • Failed dental extractions
  • Naturally large sinus cavities or thin sinus walls

The sinus lift procedure is specially designed to address the unique anatomical situation of the upper jaw. Using an array of x-rays and digital scans, , Dr. Tall will conduct a detailed examination of your jawbone to determine whether the treatment can create the room and support necessary for implants. If a sinus lift does not seem appropriate for your particular case, he may recommend alternative treatments, such as dentures or bridges

The Sinus Lift Procedure

Prior to your sinus lift, Dr. Tall will typically administer both local anesthesia and deeper sedation such as nitrous oxide to help you relax. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Tall will make incisions in your gum tissue. Through these openings, he can access and raise up the sinus membrane to accommodate a bone graft.

Depending on your health needs, the doctor can harvest the grafting material from either another section of your jawbone or from donor tissue. Dr. Tall will use small screw-like posts to hold the tissue in place and gently close up the incisions with dissolvable stitches.

Recovery from a Sinus Lift

While the immediate side effects of surgery usually fade within a week, a full recovery can take anywhere from four to nine months. During the initial healing period, you may experience swelling, bleeding, and inflammation. Dr. Tall can provide a prescription for an anti-inflammatory and provide a special mouthwash and saline spray to prevent infection. In addition, you will need to eat a soft diet and be especially careful when brushing your teeth.

It is essential that you take the time to rest and allow your body to heal after surgery.

Most of all, it is essential that you take the time to rest and allow your body to heal. Dr. Tall will advise you about when you can return to work, exercise, and the rest of your normal routine. If the graft is successful, you can receive your dental implants in four to five months when the new tissue has fully integrated with your jawbone structure.
