What Does the Dental Implants Timeline Involve?
The dental implants timeline typically lasts about three to six months, depending on whether or not you need supplemental procedures, such as bone grafting or sinus lift surgery. The timeline includes dental implant placement, healing, abutment placement, and final delivery of the restoration. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Mark Tall at Sandcreek Dental in Idaho Falls, ID, provides quality dental care in a warm and comfortable environment through every stage of treatment. Dental implants provide unmatched comfort and support compared to other traditional restorations.
Phases of Treatment
Because dental implants require surgery and a period of healing, treatment will require multiple appointments and steps to complete.
For patients interested in receiving dental implants, the first step includes a complete oral health exam with Dr. Tall. During the consultation, he will use state-of-the-art technology to determine the health of your teeth and gums. He will also inspect your jawbone to ensure you have healthy bone strength to support the implants.
Because dental implants require surgery, Dr. Tall will also review your medical history and current health to ensure you do not have any medical conditions that may inhibit your body’s response to surgery. Once candidacy has been determined, he will create a customized treatment plan and carefully review the procedure with you in detail, answering any questions you may have. Our team will also take the time to discuss the costs involved and provide you with a list of instructions to follow before and after surgery.
In some cases, you may require tooth extractions or preliminary surgical procedures, such as bone grafting or a sinus lift. Although these types of surgery add four to nine months to the overall timeline, they can provide a firm foundation for your dental implants. Patients who do not need any preliminary procedures can proceed straight to dental implant surgery.
Dental Implant Placement
At Sandcreek Dental, dental implant surgery is performed by a highly trained oral surgeon in our office. This arrangement allows all your treatment, from start to finish, to be performed under the same roof, eliminating multiple locations and difficulty schedule appointments. One single implant can generally be placed in about one to two hours. The total length of your procedure will depend on how many implants are being placed.
After surgery, the healing period generally takes about three to six months in order to allow adequate time for the implants to fuse with your surrounding bone tissue through osseointegration. Dr. Tall will monitor your recovery through a series of follow-up appointments. During this time you will typically wear a removable, temporary restoration.
Once the implants have successfully fused, you will undergo a minor procedure for the abutments to be placed atop the implants. The abutment is what sits above the gum line and provides an adequate connection for your restoration. Recovery generally takes about two weeks.
When the soft tissues have healed around your abutments, we will take impressions to create a custom mold for creating your restoration. Dr. Tall will also use a shade guide to select the tooth color that closely resembles your natural teeth so your restoration provides realistic results.
Dental implants provide lifelike support and oral health benefits that make your time investment worthwhile.
In about one to weeks, at your final appointment, Dr. Tall will connect the custom-made dental crown, dental bridge, or denture to your implants. Once in place, you will enjoy restored dental function and natural-looking results.
