Gum Reshaping for a More Beautiful Smile

Some dental patients are unhappy with their smile because of the appearance of the gum line along their upper teeth. Excessive gingival tissue extending onto the front teeth can cause what is sometimes called a gummy smile. The gum line may also be uneven or asymmetrical. About Gingival Contouring

Gingival contouring, often called gum reshaping or gum contouring, is a common procedure performed in cosmetic dentistry. Some patients with otherwise beautiful teeth have extended gum tissue, which can be a genetic trait or may sometimes be caused by certain medications. This excess tissue can cause the teeth to appear smaller or misshapen, making some patients feel self-conscious about their smile.

Dr. Tall often recommends gingival contouring to these patients, which yields dramatic results in a single appointment. With this simple procedure, unwanted tissue can be eliminated, so the teeth appear longer and more proportionate. Gum reshaping can also be used to sculpt a patient’s uneven gum line, creating a more pleasing frame for the teeth. In some cases, removing excess gum tissue may also make it easier to maintain the health of the gums.

The Procedure

Gingival sculpting can be performed with a scalpel or minimally invasive laser. This procedure can be completed in about an hour, with minor discomfort to the patient. A local anesthetic numbs the gums, and your doctor will precisely trim and contour the tissue. Dr. Tall understands that some patients experience anxiety in the dental chair, so nitrous oxide sedation is always offered for our procedures. In this case, patients will be asked to rest until the effects of the medication have worn off completely. After the appointment, patients can return to their usual activities right away. You will be provided with post-operative instructions, which may include eating soft foods until healing is complete.

Depending on your goals, gum reshaping can be used to lengthen the appearance of one tooth or all the teeth that are visible when you smile. Some patients choose to combine gingival contouring with other cosmetic procedures, such as porcelain veneers or teeth whitening. Dr. Tall offers a complete smile makeover for patients who wish to transform their smile and face the world with renewed confidence.
