What are Porcelain Crowns?
Tags: Porcelain Crowns
You may have heard of porcelain veneers, but have you heard of porcelain crowns? If you suffer from teeth that are severely worn down, broken, cracked, or very decayed, porcelain crowns can come to your rescue!
Think of a porcelain crown as a “cap” that fits over your natural tooth. This cap completely covers the tooth, restoring its size, look, shape, and strength. The crown is cemented into place, and depending on a few factors, can last upwards of 15 to 20 years. It’s like a suit of armor! Crowns are thicker than veneers and provide more strength.
When should I get a porcelain crown?
There are several situations where it is recommended to get a porcelain crown:
- If tooth decay has destroyed most of your tooth
- If teeth grinding has severely worn down your teeth
- To cover teeth that are very misshapen and discolored
- To support a tooth that no longer has much structure
- After getting a root canal
- To replace broken cusps
What is the porcelain crown procedure like?
Dr. Mark Tall will first numb the tooth and gums. He will then shape (or shave down) your natural tooth to make room for the new crown. An impression of your tooth will be sent to a dental laboratory to custom craft the new crown for a perfect fit. You will wear a temporary crown until your custom crown is complete.
In the next visit, you will have your new crown placed and Dr. Tall will inspect it for proper fit and bite function. Once correctly in place, Dr. Tall will cement the crown to your natural tooth. In as little as two visits, you will have a strong, fully functional tooth!
